SAVE THE CHAMBERCOMBE MANOR QUILT!
"SAVE OURÂ QUILT" APPEAL
A huge thank you to everyone who donated to this appeal.

The second Prize Draw on the 28th of October and the winner was L Brice. Congratulations and thank you!

Great news! Chambercombe Manor has taken expert advice, and it seems that various options are possible; after careful thought, the Trustees have decided on the following:
The quilt will be repaired by hand, using fine threads and conservation-grade materials. It may be necessary to cover parts of the quilt with fine, conservation-grade net (which is almost invisible) and will hold existing fabrics together. This will stabilise any existing problems, will greatly add to the life of the quilt and slow any further deterioration.

Conservation work will commence this winter, and the quilt should be on display again in time for our springtime opening.

This is all possible due to the extreme generosity of those who donated, the kindness, generous time and expertise of the specialist who came to the Manor to assess the quilt, and The Quilters' Guild of The British Isles whose efforts led to connecting us with that specialist in the first place.

ABOUT THE APPEAL
Saving a delicate piece of History
In the 1930s, five American ladies came to stay at Chambercombe Manor over a Summer period. During their stay they made a quilt by hand stitching material and included a picture of each of their dresses that they had worn while at the Manor. It is believed that the material in the pictures of the ladies was taken from their dresses as well.

When the quilt was finished they gave it to the owner of the Manor to say thank you for their hospitality. The quilt can still be seen today on the old four poster bed in one of the rooms at Chambercombe Manor.

The quilt is now the last surviving material artefact at the Manor and even though it has been lovingly cared for, time and damp conditions have taken it's toll on this beautifully crafted quilt and it urgently needs to be restored to it's former glory before it is lost forever to the ravages of time.

NEWS ABOUT THE APPEAL
THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS SO FAR!
9th August 2017
Thank you for your donations so far!
Thanks to the kindness and generosity of several donors who know and love the Manor, we have already raised £127 towards the repair or conservation of the quilt. Thank you so much to you very special people!
We have also been looking for a specialist who can assess the quilt. Several requests and phone calls have been sent or made to Quilter groups, associations, shops and on-line forums in both the UK and the US. We are still waiting for responses, so we will give you an update as soon as possible.
THANK YOU TO THE QUILTERS' GUILD!
5th September 2017
A huge and sincere thanks to the Quilters' Guild of the British Isles!
I was not sure whether I should mention this, but I've decided to reveal some experiences over the last 2-3 weeks to emphasise how amazing the Quilters' Guild are. Over this period I sent emails and submitted messages to ask for references for specialists that we could contact or to raise awareness of the appeal to many Quilter associations, groups and forums in the UK. I was surprised to be met with a wall of silence (or worse in some cases). Even voicemails to some of the larger groups were never responded to. It was very saddening, to be honest.
Suddenly, The Quilters' Guild came to the rescue! I cannot emphasise enough how wonderful they are! Even though they are not permitted to provide financial support as both Chambercombe Manor Trust and The Quilters' Guild are both charities, their expertise, vast network and knowledge are only matched by their incredible generosity, passion and kindness.
Thanks to the Guild, we now have a more accurate idea of the age of the Chambercombe Quilt, awareness of the quilt has been increased three hundredfold and we have been given references to multiple specialists, one of whom has taken a very active interest in the quilt which we are absolutely over the moon about.
Amazing
EVEN MORE DONATIONS!
